Seminar on accommodation classification in Bhutan

May 30, 2008 | The Tourism Council of Bhutan organized a seminar on the standardization of hotels in Bhutan in collaboration with Austrian Coordination Office on the 22nd of May, 2008 in Taj Tashi,Thimphu. More than 90 representatives from hoteliers, tour operators and ABTO attended the seminar. The seminar was opened by the DG of TCB, Mr. Kesang Wangdi. The Coordinator of ACO Ms. Marie-Christine Weinberger briefed the gathering on the Austria – Bhutan cooperation in Tourism; Ms. Weinberger also introduced Mr. Christian Mazal, the incoming Resident Coordinator of the ACO.

When the floor was open for discussion, the stakeholders expressed various views such as theconcern over environmental issues not being mentioned in the proposed system; Inquirieswere made as to how the new system will address hotel tariff issues when the 1 to 5 star categories will be introduced and concerns raised on where the small establishments will fit intothe new classification system. Mr. Rinzin Jamtsho, the Head of the Services Division, TCB andthe moderator for the seminar mentioned that issues and suggestions raised by the stakeholders will be incorporated into the final report while formulating the classification system.

Mr. Rinzin Jamtsho stated that the event was successful and mentioned that there was ageneral consensus among the stakeholders supporting the new proposed classification and standardization system for tourist accommodation in Bhutan.
