May 19, 2008 | The development of the Royal Heritage Trek an initiative of Tourism Council of Bhutan and ABTO to diversify tourism products with more focus in Central and Eastern Bhutan and also to commemorate the Centenary and Coronation celebration this year has been completed.

The Trek was developed in coordination with the Bumthang Dzongkhag to revive the historic route between Wangdichhoeling/ Domkhar Trashichhoeling Palace in Bumthang and Kuenga Rabten/ Samchhoeling Palce in Trongsa. Traditionally this route has been used by the Monarch to travel between their Summer Palace in Bumthang and Winter Palace in Trongsa.

Except for a few herders and the locals around, the trail was not in use for a long time. Recently the trail was rediscovered as a potential trekking route offering an invigorating adventure with every section of the trail contributing its own attractions. The trail is a 4 day moderate hiking, which starts from Wangdicholing, Bumthang and ends in Kuenga Rabten, Trongsa or vice versa, offering an abundance of flora and fauna along the way. Over 40 species of birds have also been identified in that area. Ground leveling and water facilities have been developed at the campsites and a local horse contractor has also been identified.
