Evaluation criteria for Luxury tent camps and Eco-lodges in the Eastern circuit (Trashigang,Trashiyangtse, Lhuentse ,Mongaar)

A proposal for luxury tent/ eco-lodge should satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Provide a wholesomely satisfying natural experience
  • Located in a scenic area that gives tourists an exotic and natural view of several flora and fauna.
  • The accommodation to should have basic facilities as water, hygienic rest/ kitchen area, clean toilet facilities, etc.
  • The design and structure should be in line with the natural surroundings
  • The facility should be in accordance with the Bhutan’s responsible and sustainable philosophy/ guidelines
  1. Positive environmental impact:
  • Code of conduct for tourists to ensure ecological and environmental sustainability. This could include procedures as providing travellers with relevant suggestions to minimize damage to environment
  • Initiatives such as re-using and recycling, energy efficiency, no waste on trails, etc. to minimize carbon footprint
  • Other initiatives/ procedures to ensure sustainable tourism in the area/ region
  1. Positive social impact: ensuring that the local community benefits from the tourism activity. This could be ensured through initiatives as:
  • Suggest visiting tourists ways to minimize negative impact on local cultures
  • Suggest destination visits to appropriate social projects/ attractions (e.g. textile tour in villages) for direct/ indirect benefits to the local community
  • Employment of local community as guides, support, etc. The recruitment of local guides could be in addition to the group guide to ensure
  • Local sourcing of food or material
  • etc.
  1. Provide quality services and information of the surroundings
  • Provide information of the network of treks, flora and fauna
  • Organise any special trips on request
  • Provide basic facilities for drying, washing and first-aid
  • Etc.

TCB will assist in land aquisition for development of the accommodation facility and facilitate availability on lease in accordance with government procedures.

Design of the eco-lodge/ luxury tents is up to the interested party’s discretion but needs to be approved by the TCB.
