Farewell to Dasho Lhatu Wangchuk (DG) and Wangchuk (PO)
Dasho Lhatu Wangchuk served as the Director General from 2002 – March, 2008. Prior to his appointment in the erstwhile Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Dasho was the Ambassador to Dacca, Bangladesh. During Dasho Lhatu’s tenure as the DG of DoT some of the major activities that were carried out were:
- Established the practice of consultation with stakeholders.
- Held national tourism workshop and spent time meeting with all the stakeholders, both public and private sector.
- Streamlined visa and permit procedures
- Started capacity building within the Department by conducting in-house training, workshops and regular meetings. Encouraged officers and staff to actively participate in relevant meetings to give them exposures
- Many officers and staff were sent abroad for masters program and training
- Set up Research Cell and trained several officers to produce International Tourism Monitoring Report on a regular basis.
- The construction of the Hotel and Tourism Management Training Institute (HTMTI) underway.
- Development of legal tourism instruments such as:
- National Tourism Policy & Responsible Tourism Strategy
- Tourism Master Plan
- Comprehensive Tour Operators Rules and Regulations
- Trekking in Bhutan: Rules and Regulations
- FAM and FOC Regulations
- Regulations on accommodations for international tourists
- Bhutan Tourism Bill/Act
Mr. Wangchuk has served in the erstwhile Department of Tourism for the last 7 years. After successfully appearing for the Royal Civil Service Commission exam in 1998, he was attached with the Administrative and Finance Section of the then Ministry of Trade and Industry as an Administrative Officer. In 2001, Mr. Wangchuk joined the former DoT as the Promotions Officer under the Marketing and Promotions Division. While in service Mr. Wangchuk not only successfully overlooked the publication of various promotional materials such as:
Development of comprehensive promotional collaterals including films, CDs, DVDs, brochures, magazines, posters, pamphlets, travel directory, maps, trekking route maps, training iconographic book and the legacy of a King.
Wangchuk was also responsible for the drafting of the:
- Tourism Master Plan
- 9th Five Year Plan
- 10th Five Year Plan
The staff of TCB organized a picnic lunch and dinner for Dasho Lhatu Wangchuk and Wangchuk respectively in order to show their appreciation of their contribution to the tourism sector, their good comradeship and the cohesive atmosphere they created in the workplace.
