Skills competition in hospitality standards

February 2, 2008 | The Department of Occupational Standards under the Ministry of Labour and Human Resources organized a three day Hospitality and Skills Competition from 17-19th January, 2008 in Bumthang. The Tourism Council of Bhutan provided technical support with eight officers assessing the participants during the competition.

The objective of the competition was to: (put this in a separate box on the side)

  • To publicize the role skill competition can play in the development of workers skills and overall human resource development.
  • To encourage workers to acquire skills by giving them the opportunity to compete against peers.
  • To promote the image and status of blue-collar workers to the wider public.
  • To showcase and recognize the work excellence of our young skilled workers in a competitive setting.
  • To provide Vocational Education and Training (VET) system with an objective and precise means of measuring the comparative and collective quality of its output.
  • To promote co-operation between and among institutions in the VET system, the private sectors through industry association, organizations and enterprises, and various government units and agencies in pursuit of work excellence and commendable work values for the blue-collar workers.
  • To promote cooperation between the government, industry and training institutions in vocational training.
  • To publicize as well as validate the occupational skill standard, improve skill testing in general and the standard of workers’ skill nation wide.
  • To evaluate training programme and gain public acceptance of these programmes.
  • To promote the transfer and exchange of vocational technical education and training technologies between and among training and development organization and institutions, training providers and trade experts.

There were 46 participants in total for the competition in four different trades; Front Office Services, Commercial Cooking, House Keeping and Food & Beverage Services.

The participants were awarded cash prizes (Nu.10, 000/- for first, Nu.7, 000/- for second and Nu.5, 000/- for third position in each trade) and certificate of merit, certificate of competency and certificate of participation by the DOS, MoLHR.
