Not only is it physically beautiful, but everything about Bhutan seemed to me to have such a sense of peace
I recently returned from a holiday in Bhutan and I have been meaning
to write and say thank you for such a wonderful time.
From the moment I stepped on the Drukair plane at Kathmandu I felt I
was going somewhere special but I never imagined such a lovely
country existed. Not only is it physically beautiful, but everything
about Bhutan seemed to me to have such a sense of peace. The culture
is fascinating and the people are just so warm and welcoming. I can’t
say enough about our guide and driver, they treated us with such
kindness and respect, the like of which is not often afforded to
western women abroad.
I was most impressed with your attitude towards the natural
environment and your commitment to sustainable development. I work in
the field of nature conservation here in the UK and have done for 10
years but I’ve never known a British government place the needs of
wildlife or the environment above economic gain. I wish there was
something I could do to help your country in its development; that
would be a real privilege. However, I struggle to say Bhutan is
“developing”, you are far more advanced than you realise.
Your policy on tourism is very wise and I hope you will proudly hold
on to your culture and traditions and not let western consumerism
change Bhutan too much. In many ways we are not the sort of society
you should aspire to (though we do have our good points!).
I hope I am fortunate enough to return to Bhutan before too long,
hopefully for much longer next time!
Thank you again for a very special experience.
