The Memorial Chorten, Thimphu, located on Doebum Lam in the southern-central part of the city near the Indian military hospital. The Tibetan style stupa was built in 1974 to honor the third king of Bhutan, Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, and is a well-known landmark in the city with its golden spires crowned with a golden crescent moon and the sun.
The Chorten is led by an entrance with large prayer wheels to its left and gardens where the pigeons and children dance in a co-existent harmony while their grandparents circumambulate and prostrate at the Chorten. The Memorial Chorten is truly a place of the gods where people of all ages, young and old alike congregate in the compound for a common good.
The stupa has beautiful mandalas painted on the walls and the ceilings. A circular Stairs take the tourists to the second and the third floor where they can come out to the open balcony and take in an amazing view of the Thimphu city.
