One of the most historic musical events to ever take place in Bhutan!

On October 12th, 2013 the Royal Textile Academy (RTA) in Thimphu will be hosting the first ever opera performance in Bhutan!! The opera is being produced with the support of the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) and is the culmination of almost a decade of effort and preparation.

On the eve of the Royal Wedding Anniversary the RTA will host an original production of G.F. Handel's Acis and Galatea set in the context of Bhutan's mythological landscape. Acis and Galatea was selected for the project because of its universal theme of the redemptive power of love. Furthermore this original production of the timeless classic will organically incorporate elements of Bhuatnese culture into the opera transforming it into something truelly unique.

Creative talents from all across the globe have come together to help realize the project. The opera will feature a completely international orchestra and choir in addition to the foreign actors and Bhutanese dancers.

The costumes for the lead characters, Acis and Galatea are being created by the designers from RTA and Opera Bhutan incorporating Bhutanese textiles.

Daily rehearsals are taking place at the Royal Textile Academy Courtyard and are open to the public.
